Why we line every wall in birch plywood

Every wall and ceiling in a Hide is one continuous skin of birch plywood. Here is why we never paint it.

Birch plywood is light, stable and warm to the touch. Oiled by hand, it glows in low winter sun and darkens slowly to honey over the years.

No paint, no plaster

Paint would hide the grain and need redoing. Plaster would crack as the timber frame moves. Plywood simply settles in.

We use formaldehyde-free sheets from FSC certified forests, cut on our own machine to the millimetre.

“A plywood room looks finished on the day it is made, and better ten years later.”
