The first hard frost came to Fernwood at the end of October. The show home stayed warm on one small box stove.
Twenty-five square metres is easy to heat. Triple glazing, wood fibre insulation and a box stove on a concrete plinth keep a Hide warm through a northern winter.

Frost changes the meadow completely: every seed head turns white and the valley fills with mist. The tall window frames it like a painting.
“One armful of logs keeps the whole house warm until morning.”
